Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

    ★★★★½

The early aughts were an incredible era for movies. Every time I watch Pirates, it makes me nostalgic for a time when Disney could churn out fresh IP movies filled with compelling characters that were filmed on real sets with special effects made to hold up 20+ years later (a skill the studio has apparently forgotten; looking at you Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White 2025).

    Always, always rewatch-able. 🏴‍☠️

  • Cruella

    Cruella

    ★★½

Cruella would have been far more compelling if it was reworked into an original story that revolved around a fierce showdown between rival fashion designers. Instead, it remains tethered to its IP roots, resulting in a narrative that veers from convoluted to outright nonsensical. Still, we got to watch two of our finest living actresses ham it up on screen together, that counts for something.

    Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

A revenge tale shown expertly and beautifully in pieces across decades featuring incredible vehicular set pieces in between sparse, thoughtful dialogue.

Though it doesn’t reach the highs of Fury Road, the movie does not really seem interested in trying. Focusing instead on the moments that formed Furiosa into who we met on screen almost ten years ago allows this movie to feel of a piece with its predecessor but with a distinct tone and vision that sets it apart.
