I've felt it's always been easy for films to merely touch on and proclaim representation of subject matters... but not Firman Firman.
It grabs and chokeholds the top 10 pop subject matters of the past decade as airtight as possible for the entire duration - and tops off with a refreshing stance that leaves you reflecting for days.
Firman Firman personally reminded me that making a change to society at large is difficult, but it starts and ends with nuance.…
It's very stripped of all the bells and whistles of modern cinema. It's not showy, it doesn't try to be... a film. It shows the human condition as it is, in an honest and humble way. And that yields a certain beauty and a feeling of appreciation in the glamorless and mundane, that you just don't get with other films.
Set entirely during one neon-lit night in Hong Kong, this film feels like an experimental departure from Wong Kar Wai's own acclaimed 'In the Mood For Love' in terms of... Literally everything except the mirror shots! The characters are fully formed and their arc very interesting. They're presented in Revenant-style deformed wide angle close ups, so intimacy is in parallel with what's happening around them. It seems to also give the feeling that the characters are vulnerable preys, always on the lookout for danger and adventure. If you love Wong Kar Wai, and want something different from Wong Kar Wai, watch this!
