I had high expectations for this film after being blown away by Perfect Blue.
To say Satoshi Kon is ambitious is an understatement and Millennium Actress is no different. Blending real and fictional events seamlessly, this is a dizzying ride into the past of a once famous Japanese actress. Trying to discern what is real from fake is a challenge, and maybe thats the point. For a first watch, you are better off just surrendering to the film than trying…
This worked for me. A very human story that weaves humor and “pain” effortlessly. There are a couple standout scenes that really got me.
The performances are fantastic from both Kieren and Jesse. I was skeptical about all the buzz Kieren has been getting this award season but I was dead wrong. His performance makes the film.
Jesse’s writing and direction feel so natural, it gives the film an authenticity where it’s not preachy or overly dramatized. It’s just “real”. Excited to see more from him as a writer/director.
I wish I could erase my memories and experience the final chapters again for the first time in this format.
A near-perfect finale to one of the best series of all time. If you are a fan of storytelling, Attack on Titan is a must watch.
