El Sur 1983
Almost perfect film spoiled, almost Magnificient Ambersons like, by the abruptness of the ending and the resulting sense it was incomplete and the story unfinished. Highlights being the performances of Sonsoles Aranguren and Icíar Bollaín as Estrella and the use of light and shadow in the cinematography. The essential idea of a Spanish Republican Civil War veteran hiding out in Northern Spain as a dowser for farmers is a great narrative part in itself and the scene at the end where he is confronted at the end by his daughter is a top tier example of screenwriter and of cinema. Highly Recommended.
