Home Alone is /the/ Christmas movie in Poland, which means this is a movie I've grown up with and that has grown up with me. One thing I appreciate more and more with each rewatch is how, despite its obviously silly premise, the movie has a rigorous internal logic justifying every step. Even though (or maybe because) we live in the age of wikis and pedantic YouTubers, it's hard to imagine any movie pulling this off today.
The internet tells me Anora is a 'romantic comedy-drama'. As far as I can tell, 'comedy-drama' is technically correct, but there's something oddly literal about that tag. The first third of the movie seems to be setting up a straight drama, the middle almost devolves into slapstick, and the final third swings back a bit, but not all the way to drama. The resulting tone is strange - even when I thought the movie was funny I could never be…
