Also I’ve been thinking about how much men suck, in general, recently. And it’s a very depressing thought that the default state of men in the world is “worst person you’ve ever met in some new previously never thought of way” and i am exhausted and ashamed and kinda worried that I share any characteristics with men like this
Before I went into this, I felt like I was destined to love it. Robert Pattinson plus Bong Joon Ho? What could go wrong?
I had a fun time, especially in the first half - but it was just a bit too tonally all over the place to make a real connection with. It felt like one step up from a marvel superhero movie - and for a filmmaker of his talent, that is completely unacceptable. Some of the dialogue…
First up, I loved the book! It was dreamlike, ethereal, strange. I did not love the movie. I was super excited because it was my first premiere, and I imagined so many fun ways to bring Hot Milk to life and to preserve that dreaminess and absurdity - but I think this was a case study in just not being confident in your filmmaking(?) It was afraid to be too strange and alienate the audience. I could feel the insecurity…
