Probably my least favorite of the Miyazaki movies but that does not mean it’s bad. It’s a solid, fun movie with some interesting characters and of course world class animation, but the plot is a bit lackluster and its ending is more muted than I’d have liked. There are also multiple moments of creepy older guys hitting on a very young female character that feel icky.

My favorite movie. Lost in Translation perfectly visualizes the experience of being thrust into the unknown and by happenstance meeting another human that you click with.

It captures the uncertainty of the future, the loathing of past mistakes, the desire for connection, and the power of the Japanese culture as a salve for Western malaise.

Trap is a great title. You get trapped into watching Shyamalan’s daughter perform shitty pop music. Some of the acting is good. Most of it is.. not.

Ralph Fiennes is arguably in the top three best actors over 50 on the planet. This character is so nuanced, I never quite knew if his intentions were what he said they were. A very interesting yet somewhat gloomy, Game of Thrones-y look inside the papal conclave with a twist I was truly not expecting. All around, the writing and acting in this movie are top-tier.
