Meant to watch this since Ryuichi Salamoto passed a few months back. His emotion filled performance mirrors his amazing score for the film. Him and Bowie are so good here!

    Ooof...

It was great but so demoralizing. I want to hug my wife but she’s sleeping.

I know ambitious men like those two cunt generals, people that would sacrifice anything and anyone to advance. To see shitheels like that do what they do through a lense of war where thousands of lives are lost to their whims was just hard to watch. It’s hard because I can’t help but know that people like that are in positions of leadership everywhere.

    Seriously fuck people.

On the bright side Kirk Douglas is a fucking stud.

I got sudden urge to watch classic Japanese cinema, Samurai movie specifically. The Seven Samurai nostalgia is probably what brought it on and after ordering Kagemucha, Ran and Harakiri on Amazon, I learned about the Criterion Channel being available in Canada.

After some research I made a long to-watch list and The Sword of Doom ended up being my first watch.

Tatsuda Nakadai is a revelation here for me in the role of Ryunosuke, a quiet sociopathic swordsman he plays…

I found this to be a highly enjoyable retelling of Musashi Miyamoto’s beginnings.

The cinematography is quite beautiful and made me want to visit Japan more than ever with its striking mountain range shots and lush greenery.

The acting was great with Father Takuan being my favorite casting. As much love as I have for Toshiro Mifune, he’s a bit of an odd choice to play a 17 year old. He’s 34 here but with his grizzled and weathered appearance, he could be 44.

I’m very much looking forward to part 2.
