The movie leans pretty hard into on screen extravagance over real life history and... physics. It is a classic good guy/bad guy movie which makes a lacklustre/shallow attempt to recognise Japanese political and cultural imperatives.

Good movie, I think for its time it couldn't really reveal how brutal AIDS is. For a more real and confronting look at what the AIDS epidemic looked like I recommend The Normal Heart (2014)
