Mama, this is cinema. A Cold War harking Russian worldwide domination plot? Spectacular! Angelina Jolie jumping, diving, bombing, shooting and neck-snapping her way through hordes of men? Incredible! Part of the plot setup relying on the fact that we’re meant to buy that arachnologists have ‘unrestricted access to North Korea’ with no further explanation? Work!

An absolutely bonkers spy action romp where the less you think about it, the better. 100% Should’ve been the start of an incredibly camp b-grade franchise to rival James Bond.

I wasn’t expecting Tar to be the kind of film it ended up being, but I was captivated until the very end regardless. Cate Blanchett carries it all on her shoulders with long lingering shots and uncomfortable close ups. It’s a quiet and claustrophobic movie. You’re never really sure if what you’ve just heard is real or imagined. And it’s all about the subtext. So much is purposely left floating just off screen, for you to interpret how you wish. I think it’s a meditation on power, but you might think it’s something entirely different. Beautifully shot too, worth it alone for the brutalist German architecture.

One of the best action movies of all time with not a single weak link. Lots of guns, lots of explosions, lots of car chases, but all of it grounded in a way that many modern action films fail to capture with their heavy reliance on CGI. There’s a tempo and realism to the action sequences that notches up tension, you’ll know what I mean when you see it. Watch the Directors Cut, the theatrical release omits key scenes that flesh out the narrative in important ways.
