I have seen the first two movies about five times each (obviously), but I just never had any interest in sitting down with this one. Its reputation is middling, certainly, but beyond that it just always seemed like the definition of a movie that had no reason to exist. Parts I and II tell you everything you need to know, and any pitch for a potential Part III seemed like it would be "and then some more stuff happens."

Second watch over the weekend. Stealth MVP of this viewing was Michael Shannon, who chooses the best possible delivery for every line. Also, Ana de Armas is even more remarkable in this than I remembered—she spends the entire movie playing essentially five emotions at once, all leading to that final moment which is just *chef's kiss.*

I'd like to thank the Internet for somehow not spoiling this for me all this time, because YEESH. That was... something else. Your serve, Spike.

Every once in a while you see a movie's title, director and premise, and you think you know exactly what it is going to be. And then it is that. Tom Hooper's direction continues to be prestige-y but cold and awkward, and overall I never felt particularly engaged with the story he was trying to tell.

Performances are good, though. Redmayne will get the attention, but it's Vikander who gives this movie whatever energy it's able to muster.
