Deadpool & Wolverine 2024
Mushy garbage. Cobbled lazily out of leftover bits of better comics property, delivered as a love letter to the 20th Century Fox Marvel canon - an unlovable monster previous film-going generations correctly consigned to the dustbin of history. An entire generation of filmmakers, producers and writers enmeshed in the Marvel Complex have become too enamoured with their own success and better countries would send them into the fields to do something useful, like pull up weeds.

Macross Plus 1994
The primary revelation here - that Top Gun is actually cyberpunk - is very good, and when Plus is in gear this OVA rips. Like with Gundam, it often feels like the dog that caught the car with its own themes and feels three script revisions and 20% more budget away from really, truly good - the ending should have either been more literal, like the OVA has been up until that point, or more figurative, like the weird dreamy…

Lucky Number Slevin 2006
Tonally very bizarre and almost sophomoric but kind of in a charming way? Like the kind of screenplay your best friend in second year uni would pitch you on except somehow an all-star cast made it in? Like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in that it has the weird 2000s preoccupation with there being a Guy Who Is Deal Is He’s Gay. I think they should have killed the girlfriend, honestly, that would have been darker and weirder.

Second instalment in Millennial Be Hot Do Crimes Movies - very bitter and cynical and paranoid and a great time. Very funny onion stuff whose core is rotten and small but that’s the movie’s thesis so… it’s fine! Gilroy notices that spy movies are just noir movies with gland problems and so just slams them back in the other way in reverse. Many good times, love the frames moving around like Super Mario platforms
