A real baseball-ass baseball movie. Which is to say, like fans of the sport itself, Eephus clings hard (a bit too hard at times) to the traditions and lore and classic players and the songs that creates a comforting sense of nostalgia for those that love the game.
I like how it replicates the feeling of watching an entire baseball game. Hanging out with some randos, talking about everything except baseball. Then before you know it, movie is over. And…
Taking away the heart, because no rom-com should be a solid 2hrs. If When Harry Met Sally could do it, so can you.
Other than that…good stuff.
I loved this one. Loved. This. Film. Really, really quite lovely stuff. Kelly Reichardt is one of the very best American filmmakers working today, and this now all but solidifies that title.
Like almost all of her work, this is going to take some time to marinate for me, and I’m sure I’ll have a more nuanced appreciation on second visiting

Your enjoyment of this is really going to depend on your interest in the subject of Robert Caro (and to a lesser extent, his editor). As someone who’s a fan of Caro (but will probably never actually get around to reading any of his work), this was catnip.
