This is a good example of a great old-school superhero movie. The dichotomy is natural. You don't end up being superhero-level good or villain-level bad by making bad choices, you can only be assigned that status beforehand by fate. Cinematographic choices parallel such a story. For example, Mr. Glass' birth scene is shown through mirrors, representing the moral conflict of a manipulator. Bruce Willis is shown in a biblical way, with the drowning scene in the pool symbolizing a baptism and rebirth. Shyamalan portrays more than a superhero, but a savior.
We might say that this movie is a better version of The Revenant.
