  Tom Cruise is a little too believable here.

  This is a solid action movie with the some of the best casting decisions ever. Tom Cruise is so powerfully lethal throughout the movie, and Jamie Foxx is the perfect choice to toe the line between likeable cabby and trope-y reluctant hero. Micheal Mann’s touch for the little moments is on display too, although it’s a little hammy. It works like a lot of his movies do - as a stylish, hyperreal take on an otherwise unremarkable action premise.

  Feels weird even ranking or discussing this as a standalone film - to me it has always been inseparable from the next two.

  As a first act, this is a great experience. Every element is so meticulously fleshed out and detailed that it’s almost redundant, but the feeling of an upward slope that envelopes the entire movie keeps me from boredom.   Went into this thinking it’d mostly be interesting as a precursor to Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity but was happy to think it stands on its own as an entertaining piece of abduction horror.
