    Without hyperbole, this is probably what led Hitler to invade France. Assuming he saw this at some German filmhaus and, quite reasonably, said "Jesus Christ, what is WITH these fucking people... Ready the tanks."

    Renoir does some nifty camera stuff here and there, which probably felt new in '39, but he sure doesn't make many more good decisions anywhere else along the way (like giving himself a big sloppy kiss of a part.)

    So bad it's... terrible.

    Probably the worst thing anybody in this cast has been in, and Wahlberg's been in some straight up trash. I'd hazard this is a good barometer if you're unsure of someone's movie taste. Heaven help you if a friend or loved one likes this movie.

    There is some cool imagery here, much of which 9 year old me would have wanted on my Trapper Keepers, but the fan service and constraints of completely tethering the movie to the original really impeded it. Ugh, and the speeches...felt AI written.

    What a smug, deriative, annoying dumpster fire of a movie.

    Seydoux is an unequivocally good actor in everything I've seen her in. MacKay less so, but he is an interesting actor and I think he's chosen some good projects of late. But not this... definitely not this. They both need more discernment in role selection.

    We get slight touches of Cronenberg, Lynch, Garland, even Tarkovsky, but as if Bonello fed his premise into ChatGPT with those (better) directors' names, and…
