Arrival 2016
Villeneuve scores big in this sci-fi drama through his layered storytelling, which is both viscerally exciting and thought provoking.
The film can be puzzling at moments with many open ended questions (where’s Hannah’s father?, what’s the purpose of the flashbacks to Hannah?). Villeneuve masterfully puts these pieces back together through Louise’s revelation about the heptapod language.

Much happens but feels like very little happens due to poor character and story development.
Dr Yueh’s betrayal of house Atredis to save his wife plays a crucial role in setting up the battle between Atredis and Harkonnen, however very little explanation of who they are (less than 5 mins screen time for Yueh, 0 for wife). Overly reliant on dream sequences for Paul, which feel repetitive at points.
Story leaves many questions due to lack of world building setup. Many characters and motives left unexplained which leaves for a sprawling plot that goes a mile wide and an inch deep.
Visually excellent, and good performances.
