I adore this band, and so much of the footage demonstrates how utterly electric they were together. Just unstoppable in their energy, charisma, and musicianship. Loved all that.

Ultimately, though, I think a film about such a creative genius directed by one of his most fervent acolytes should have amounted to more than a bunch of VH1 Behind the Music tropes interspersed with tangents that didn’t always serve the narrative. Just felt like this should’ve matched Sly’s energy a bit more. I was pretty over it by the end, which is not something I’ve ever said while listening to Sly and the Family Stone.

I wanted this to be more of a critique of capitalism; all the heroes made their fortunes off the backs of sweatshop labor after all. But I also unintentionally wore Nikes to see this, so I’m not the best person to make that argument.

With that out of the way, this was a top-tier cast skating effortlessly on a tight script. Affleck’s direction is tonally perfect, towing the line between the sensory assault of 80’s consumerism and the quiet internal pressure of the floundering Nike basketball division.

Soundtrack of the year too- every five minutes there was a killer needle drop.

This is a horror fan’s movie, which isn’t to say you should throw it on for your “scary movie night.” It’s filled with ambiguity, liminality, dread, and an intense sense of disorientation. I was rooting for Kyle Edward Ball the whole time- he took a wild idea and went with it and never falters on this one specific mission. Whether it works or not…
