Surprisingly bold theme for a kids' movie, and some really nice designs and setpieces, but didn't really come together for me and it needed to do some more work to justify its thesis and its ending.

A sharp, energetic satire that will stick with you and fire you up.

In another director's hands this would have felt like a retread of the 'hitman with a heart of gold' premise, but Lynne Ramsay's eye is never flinching, never sympathetic or condemning. The dialogue is spare -- She (and the excellent Joaquin Phoenix) give us just enough to understand who the character is, while avoiding explaining too much.

A stronger human connection to the characters and less cliched dialogue could have saved this from being a superficial pastiche of better movies. The visuals and ideas were interesting but it never came together for me.
