Anora 2024
Absolute banger. Funny, gorgeous, complex, unpretentious. I mean, there are so many obvious things to say--we are all Anora, dumped at the side of the road after a billionaire's weekend jaunt, etc. But the tenderness that Sean Baker shows to all of these characters, the space he allows them to inhabit, the grace and humor and humanity makes it truly special. Saw it on 35mm and it absolutely makes a huge difference. The shots of the grimy Coney Island boardwalk sunset in winter is just stunning. This has a million times more depth than any self serious oscar bait of the last few years.

The Zone of Interest 2023
Evil is real. It bleeds from every frame, every sound, every moment of this film. Possibly the most thoughtful, haunting ending to a film I can remember. A deeply moral, completely serious film. Who knew movies like this were still possible.
