    It’s not often I comment on movies, but for Melancholia (and Evolution of a Filipino family) I’d say this:

    The appalling technical quality makes watching a real grind. It’s permanently out of focus. There’s no definition anywhere. The sound is as bad, with loud pops and clicks at random. I’ve seen better quality silent movies from a hundred years ago.

    I think the movie would be appreciated if one has a very good knowledge of Filipino history. Without that, watching…

    Considered a masterpiece, I was so looking forward to seeing this. I was shocked at how bad it was! I don’t think I’ve ever got on with Fellini as a film maker, no matter how hard I try.

    I can’t think that Italians themselves would be happy seeing themselves portrayed as they are here. They all seem mentally deficient in this town. They shout all the time. Most are sex crazed. Threats to misbehaving children seem non-stop. The story line…

    This is a great movie. Jack Hawkins didn’t receive much recognition in terms of awards during his lifetime, and I wonder why. He was so talented.

    Very well constructed film, with the lengthy flashbacks to give us a personal history of the wartime activities of the squad individuals as our man searches for the man who intitially burgled his house.
