this film seduces you like it’s the last time you will ever be seduced in your life, it starts out slow and takes over you, it engages all your faculties, it moves in harmony with its surroundings. it is never bored and never boring. it tells you you’ve got a face with a view then it takes you straight to the river! and it’s not over. it turns you around, and you see all those who’ve shared in the joy,…

I have foraged my mushrooms and come across a man. a wounded man, slumped against an oak tree. I hobble home with him. me and my girls will craft excuses to keep him in our midst. his black hair makes us blind. inside our seminary you hear the hems of our dresses swishing with the creek of the wood and our virtue wobbling like candlelight. we have cursed and nursed and charmed him and now the man is sitting upright. soon he is pruning the roses and sharpening the blade and me and the girls are about to fight.

I read somewhere that Soderbergh gave Fincher notes/did his own cut (???) of The Killer. in Black Bag he puts his signature spin on a similar story. it’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s just as fun as you’d expect. visually, it's stunning - if nothing else, come for the 70s vibe and all the haloed candlelight.
(I, too, would kill for Michael Fassbender, my devoted husband cooking elaborate dinners every night in his turtlenecks and spectacles - a scene that, as I write it, feels reassuringly familiar to my own domestic experience.)

a vibrant, lived-in cast of characters (not even the most minor players are superfluous or underdeveloped) existing inside the most lived-in, natural settings. hard to believe they didn’t just walk into these people’s lives and start filming. a very warm film whose stuff of life radiates on screen

I’m pleasantly surprised by how positive the reviews are for this movie. I’m also glad I misremembered the plot from 20 years ago, which was: David Duchovny is a ghost. I believe that is the plot of Ghost.

Return to Me is cute and charming AF, and gotta love a realistic Chicago (you can tell an actual Chicagoan made this movie). You can also tell that a woman made this movie because someone decided to put Fox Mulder in a tuxedo and make him dance. There’s no way I’m hiding a scar from david duchov in those blue jeans but nice try
