It’s hard to watch a film so unsure of its own identity that it becomes a tonal mess. A movie that relies so heavily on the connection between its leads fails miserably as there’s no chemistry between them. The unnecessarily convoluted non-linear plot further ruins any chance of character or emotional development, and every attempt at a heartfelt moment is undercut by a dumb Jaffa Cake, wheetabix or another random white British joke that only Hugh Grant can pull off. Even the most sappy and emotionally manipulative films manage to feel more earnest than this. Why did this make me irrationally annoyed!?
