Put on my old VHS of The Lion King and the preview (I forgot about previews!) of Angels in the Outfield got me in my feels 🥲 All those grown-ups believing a little kid, the whole stadium of people undulating their arms like angel wings, baby JGL simply wanting a family, …and Danny Glover! Family Cinema at its finest.

Damsel 2024
Solid. Not ground-breaking in grown-up film lover circles, but lots of kids are growing up, like I did, in a conservative, overwhelmingly white, evangelical world that, in order to protect promising young men/institutional status quo, routinely throws to the wolves its “good girls” doing their best.
Count me in for a whole genre of PG/PG-13 teen-girl-empowerment flicks. This one isn’t violent/gory enough to offend most parents, but not so family-friendly it loses its target audience. It’s empathetic where it could be…

The Batman 2022
More interesting than I expected, the craft here substantiates The Batman’s earnestness. Masterful use of shadow; cinematography, production design, writing, and performances all seem geared toward bringing purpose to iconography. Michael Giaccino’s score is exceptional. Casting worked like gangbusters for me. A testament to the value of creatives making bold+thoughtful choices- a combo I’ll always root for.

The Nice Guys 2016
The screenplay is just undeniable. And the film treats its teen girl characters surprisingly well. With maybe my favorite Crowe performance and whole cast sharing crackling chemistry, Angourie Rice still about damn walks away with the whole movie.
