Ok this is weird I thought the movie was named “A Brilliant Young Mind” but it shows up as “x+y” here.
It was really frustrating watching Nathan be an absolute prick to his mom after everything she did for him. I understand he lost his father but she also lost her husband at the same time.
The math stuff was cool too.
Takes itself too seriously until it doesn’t (ooh look, a cheeseburger). Relies more on shock value than having a narrative setup for the events which take place. I didn’t love Anya Taylor-Joy’s acting in this, her character lacked depth and was a little boring. Overall this movie could use a more cohesive plot and better pacing.
This movie would be nothing without Sunny Pawar. To think that a young kid (from a Mumbai slum!) could act so phenomenally on an international stage is mind-blowing. Dev Patel continues to bear the torch in the latter half of the film and keeps the momentum going. As tragic as Saroo’s story is, it cements the harsh reality of India’s impoverished class in a far more authentic manner than a fictitious story like Slumdog Millionaire. My only critique is that Lucy’s involvement in the plot felt a tad forced and unnecessary.
