I don't know why I never watched "Brokeback Mountain". There was a shortlist of movies I knew to be considered 'modern classics' and/or prestigious Oscar nominees like this movie, "Slumdog Millionaire", "The Notebook", and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" from the 2000s that I just never saw and the time between their release and the present day just kept growing and growing. While I recognize that the movie Clueless is an adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma", at least that movie makes it crystal clear what work they are adapting from. THIS movie lifts a lot of scenes, plot points, and aesthetics from "Clueless" in the following ways and I have never heard the movie or Amy Heckerling or costume designer Mona May ever given any credit. "Clueless" was released in 1995, this movie in 2001.

The way it pretends to be a noir while it's really a suburban housewife melodrama reminds me of "Mildred Pierce". Not a bad or a good thing, just is. Pretty interesting, but weird. Sterling Hayden is a cutie.
