Tony Takitani 2004
I had a phase back in college when I would gobble up Haruki Murakami stories by the dozen. This minimalist film moves like you would while reading his novels, punctuated by jazz and character oddities (e.g., Eiko's addiction to shopping). It builds upon Murakami's usual themes of ennui and loneliness through the desolate backdrop and Ryuichi Sakamoto's stellar soundtrack. And before you know it, the film is over, questions left unanswered. This is the best adaptation of a Murakami work—yes, I liked this more than Burning—that I've seen.

Yikes. A partner with that many red flags isn’t worth pursuing. I can’t watch this objectively because of how much I hated the character of Catherine. What was Truffaut going for here?
