A nice reminder of what blockbuster entertainment should be. Captures the spirit of the original with a new ‘spin’. Enjoyed it.

    Behind Enemy Lines

    ★★½

The Gene Hackman watch-a-thon continues with one that I haven’t seen since a rental from the local Blockbuster. I didn’t remember much from this movie, understandably so. There are a couple of impressive action beats, but it’s mostly dated and Owen Wilson was not the right guy for the lead.

    The Shift

    ★★★½

I went into The Shift with expectations tempered, as blending faith-based/biblical allegory with science fiction has usually been a disastrous endeavor. The end result isn’t a groundbreaking phenomenon, but a sure step in the right direction to provide variety for the faith-based market.

Neal McDonough is at his best playing villains, and he does so with gusto here. The rest of the cast does a fine job with material that mostly works, although the plot mechanics feel a bit sloppy by the conclusion.

I appreciate the message and the effort behind The Shift, and look forward to more daring films in this genre.

    The Second Chance

    ★★★★

Without a doubt one of the best faith-based films I’ve seen, one that has a story more relevant now than when it originally released. The juxtaposition of the mostly white mega church with the mostly black inner city church should make most viewers uncomfortable in the best possible way.
The sense of realism is strong, with a pastor who’s struggling to quit cursing, while another worries about his BMW being parked in “the hood”.
It’s a shame The Second Chance hasn’t been seen by more people. I think this is an important film for those inside and outside of church circles.
