« There are times when i look at people and i see nothing worth liking. »

The irony of this line is striking, coming from Daniel Plainview himself. Because that’s exactly how he makes us feel about him. He is an avaricious man, consumed by greed, who loves no one .. not even himself. And really, does he even love himself ?

    Swallow

    ★★★½

I didn’t know much about pica before watching Swallow, and honestly i still don’t fully understand it. But the film doesn’t just explore the condition it turns it into a haunting metaphor for control, repression, and quiet rebellion.

Haley Bennett is incredible ! She plays Hunter with such restraint, yet every small expression speaks volumes. You can feel the suffocation, and the desperate need to grasp onto something even if that something is a marble, a thumbtack or a battery. Some people cope with stress by bingeing on fast food , Hunter snacks on soil and sharp objects. To each their own, i guess.

I explained that this very austerity allows me to experience the film differently, without being distracted by visual embellishments, and to feel the emotions with even greater intensity. There’s something about stripping away color that forces the viewer to engage with…
