Disappointing execution of an interesting premise. Josh was fairly charming playing unimaginatively named serial killer The Butcher, a name that took about two seconds to come up with, and because why? He wraps the body parts in wax paper? No.
And that's the problem. It’s like the script was dashed off over a weekend. How do we get him out of this fix? Just don’t show it!
And the way the film nosedives after leaving the music venue gives me new respect for DePalma’s Snake Eyes, a cinematic marvel in comparison.
Dull and workmanlike. Asserts that it’s a true story, but never feels real and isn’t much fun. And who’s that dud Churchill?
A tremendous experience and not to brag but I saw the b&w version and you should too.
One of my all-time favorite films, and it still holds up (I watched it again a few months ago). The filming and sharp writing by Sharp (!) and Dede Allen’s editing are so jagged and fast-moving that it’s almost hard to keep up with the plot, but Hackman is terrific and the film investigates and subverts the usual mystery narrative. And above all the climax is a stunner.
