Such a wildly different movie than "Sixteen Candles," which we watched later in the day. Whereas "Sixteen" is maybe attempting to be a farce — or is just plain offensive in some parts — "Pretty in Pink" is earnest in illustrating a strong young female creative in Andie, the unrequited love and deep friendship of Ducky, and how nuanced class differences in high school can play out with a character like Blane. The first five minutes is just brilliant. We learn everything about the film we need to know. Also, why don't other movies use a montage in the opening credits? Such a great way to introduce characters and setting.
The rest of the story just zooms along, packing small details in, though it doesn't ever feel overwhelming.
