Stand by Me 1986
One of those cultural touchstone films from my childhood that I felt like I’d never watched an unadulterated television version of. All I remembered was the scene of them running from the train and the leeches, so I think I mistook it for 50s small town white America nostalgia slop. Turns out it’s a small town in white america in the 50s full of bullies, violence, emotionally and physically abusive parents, alcoholism, tragedy, death and children smoking cigarettes.
Shameful what hollyweird did to River Phoenix and Corey Feldman while allowing Wil Wheaton and Richard Dreyfuss to go unscathed. You’re right Gordie LaChance, it should’ve been you.

Party Girl 1995
The guy looking for Hannah Arendt books at the library being an absolute prick makes me wonder if all the other parts of this movie that seem like goofy, 90s iterations of unintentional racism and homophobia are actually deliberate criticisms of the vapid club kid/fashion world that still ring true today.
Regardless, Posey is a goddess walking on earth and all the clothes, music and jokes included in this would make it 5 stars for me even if it was otherwise about poop from a butt.

A Complete Unknown 2024
Mid credits scene: Axl Rose laughing backstage with his pal Slash. Bob walks up to them and says, “hey man, when ya gonna record ‘Heaven’s Door’?”
Axl replies, “I don’t know, but we all really love that song!”
Bob says, “I don’t give a fuck. I just want the money.” He turns towards the camera, pulls his sunglasses down his nose and winks.
Timmy clears and anyone who says otherwise is a liar. Great performances from all the leads. It’s a bad script!!!

Final Destination 3 2006
Unfortunate lack of Tony Todd in this one.
Really funny to imply that 9/11 was predicted by a photograph and was therefore part of Death’s master plan?! Seems like the writers here, given the theme of these films, didn’t feel like they could leave that subject alone??? Sort of glib and perverse the way it’s presented here and dangerous to do this in 2006 when that subject was still so taboo. Hard not to imagine that everyone who died on…
