Gorgeous, and wonderfully acted, but risks being a ~little~ too straightforward in how earnest it is. I’m deeply embarrassed to recognize many of the “narrator” segments as samples from completely forgotten 20 year old punk records.

Paris, Texas 1984
A treatise on desolation and American mythmaking in two parts, and the second part is a little bit cloying. But God damn the first half of this movie is incredible. Earth shattering performances all around, looks and sounds amazing.

Perfect Blue 1997
Ultimately I’m just not that interested in animation as a medium, but Kon was pondering many of my favorite themes here and it was well executed, so I’ll take it.
It’s wild how prescient this was about internet culture in 97. It’s also very funny to be watching this within a week of “Inland Empire” and realizing that two of moviemakings most enduring, cross-cultural themes are “acting is a form of psychosis” and “what are we doing to our beautiful queens??”

Red Rooms 2023
Completely arresting. The retired couple next to me on the plane kept tapping me to show we what soul songs they were listening to while I was trying to watch this (someone tipped them off that I’m a musician) and i still felt totally immersed. Mucho themes to ponder in this one.
