A 3-hour existential meditation on life’s meaning from the perspective of different members of a Taiwanese family. Director Edward Yang shoots the film in a detached, objective manner with no music to embellish scenes. He plants the camera down and has us watch people talk at wide angles, very seldom do we see a close up. He also loves shooting behind windows and mirrors, seeing into the soul of his characters while reflecting the modern Taipei cityscape. Neorealism is strong with this one.
