got to see this in imax which was pretty cool. korine is a singular artist who has a fascination and even sympathy with all things gross and hedonistic and disturbed. he’s provocative but not without purpose, and loves posing uncomfortable questions and not even pretending to provide any answers. the choices he make are still objectionable and weird and kinda bad, though. anyway it’s gorgeously shot and the soundtrack is fantastic, as well as the score. the editing is also…

absolutely fucking terrifying, yet still incredibly beautiful. elwood and turners friendship amidst such a horrible environment and within the context of their contrasting upbringings and philosophies is poignant and heart wrenching. an incredibly modern movie, using the tools of contemporary filmmaking to really get to the traumatic history of reform schools in america. i didn’t expect it to feel like a horror movie but now i think it couldn’t have gotten its points across otherwise.

like my 5th or 6th time seeing it??? idek atp. still perfect, it’s a miracle a movie like this exists. so sensitive and quiet and subtle but huge and loud and brash. everything is incredible, the performances (especially the underrated naomie harris), the photography, the SCORE, the pacing, the writing, the lighting oh my god i love this film. it speaks to me on a level so few movies do, and although i didn’t deal with many of chiron’s struggles, growing up and not understanding why the other boys would pick on you and then seeing that put to film is an unbelievable feeling.
