My standard critique of today’s Disney animated features is a lack of staying power from the songs (Encanto does better than most, but didn’t crack the code the way Frozen did with “Let It Go”). Still, the story feels fresh — departing from classic fairytale dynamics by allowing the family’s unresolved tension to be the true antagonist— and is fleshed out by beautiful visuals and top-notch voice acting.
