Beautiful. Didn’t feel the heartbreak at the time of watching. But it keeps coming back to me. Just like the heartbreaks in real life, they sometimes don’t feel like much at that moment they happen.

This makes me want to start writing again. Movie reviews in particular, but about everything in general. To be passionate about things. I think movie reviews should be more about the writer of the review and about the experience of the film in that moment and less about the film itself. We are alive to experience things, to stop and see and be. This film is about being. I should be more. And one day I will write that review about how I felt watching this (and every other movie).

It seems clear to me now that Bong Joon-Ho just isn’t for me. The constant sudden shifts in tone, the unlikeable characters, the haphazard genre elements. It just doesn’t mash up to an enjoyable film for me. Because that what he is aiming for I think - an enjoyable and exciting movie? The meaning isn’t to alienate and confuse the viewer and make them uncomfortable? Like the films of say Lars von Trier? But Bong’s films seem too plot-driven…

#3 of Monday classic series pt. 3

Oh boy, this caught me totally off guard and not in a good way. Everything seems rushed and haphazard. Doesn’t feel like a meticulously planned out film I was expecting. The pacing of the dialogue feels odd and the dubbing looks awful. Some of the scenes are beautiful I can admit that, but those shots feel totally out of place in the overall mess. They also almost all center on Welles’ face and thus feel quite egotistical. As if the film was planned out in front of a mirror.
