Godzilla Minus One is like if anime was real.
Images of Rashomon flicker through as an orphaned baby is found in the ruins of a war-torn Tokyo, mourning its own loss of dignity. VERY cute, comfy, calm, and super well produced! A floating easygoing plot with some cool breakaways to alternate-animated segments, and nice character interactions enhanced by the subtly animated body language that Kyoani excels at (Hyouka). Is a side story, so it can be watched without knowing anything about the show beforehand. Great music scenes too, made me choke up!
An entertaining if inconsistent pseudo-noir with too many dropped plot points, a little too short to fully explore the social consequences of the particular events, and a over-focus on policemen getting pie in their face rather than Bronson's descent into increasingly reckless heroism. His cowboy training arc was pretty fun, if a little out of place. Nothing is too stellar about the directing or production, but the intro crime scene is truly extreme and gripping. The rest of the movie doesn't fully follow suit, however. Watching this made Taxi Driver make instantly more sense to me, as if it's a direct response to movies like this.
