Really well done black and white photograph, great production design, great performances. Horrific. I'm a big fan of social safety nets.

I thought it was too long, and felt like there was a theme of record keeping (pictures, articles, film) that could have been better explored. However, beautifully acted, very nice design, and a very important story to tell. As fascism continues to grow throughout the west, stories like this are all the more powerful.

I cannot BELIEVE the amount of good reviews this thing is getting. Aesthetically, the film waffles between not particularly impressive artistic shots and pretty standard "prestige" cinematography. Thematically, it brings up a bunch of topics like the refugee experience, Judaism, the American dream, addiction, but then does NOTHING interesting with any of them. Arguably the strongest theme running through the film is Zionism. Again, it doesn't delve particularly deep into this. Given the current political context, this is morally disgusting. I find the film morally, emotionally, and aesthetically bankrupt.

My parents taped this from PBS in 1994 and as a small child I watched this film over and over. I was utterly captivated by the performances and connected utterly with the storytelling at a young age. This film is very special and important to me personally.

The film follows the story of the Roma migration, beginning in Rajasthan, moving to Egypt, Turkey, and into Europe. Each community performs songs and dances. The film is not a documentary, not a fiction, but beautiful storytelling.
