As is the case with most films based on literature, ACO feels too abridged and lacks a lot of what makes Burgess’s novel so powerful (eg Alex’s character arc, more dialogue on choosing to be good vs being forced to be good, the treatment process, time spent with F. Alexander etc).
While Kubrick’s version is still an entertaining set of audiovisuals (minus the depictions of rape), the storyline just feels too rushed.
The reason this story has stood the test of time is because of its many layers 🧅.
On the outside, it is a collection of high-quality fart noises and crass jokes. Peel to the next layer and you’ll find awkward social encounters that are relatable decades later. Keep peeling and soon enough, you’ve peeled into layers dealing with introversion, insecurity, friendship, judging, loyalty, self-doubt, etc.
What may seem like an outdated kids movie from the early 2000s is actually a timeley piece of commentary on the human condition. All you have(get) to do is peel through the layers.
