  The magic that’s usually written all over Powell & Pressburgers’ movies is toned down in this but it’s definitely still there, it’s just in the smaller details, like the people themselves and their way of life and their antics, and especially between Roger Livesey and Wendy Hiller, I love me a nice rainy day island movie I do

  Eraserhead 1977

  As the cinema lights dimmed and I waited for Eraserhead to start, David Lynch’s weather report started playing, then a video of him playing the trumpet, and then him enjoying two cookies and a coke before the movie did actually come on. Underneath it all there was a deep sense of happiness in the cinema as we watched Jack Nance enjoy being a dad.

  Nosferatu 2024

  If Herzog’s version of Nosferatu feels like a weird dream then this third re-imagining is a nightmare just like Eggers wanted.

  His style and isms are all here even when they’re starting to feel like novelties, but for the most part they feel well placed. He refuses to move the camera or take it off the tripod though which can go against the physical acting that Lily-Rose Depp brings. I think if you want to go full Possession you should let the camera go with it.
