Criterion transfer looks incredible and does justice to the amazing creatures and destruction effects. It can be cluttered with subtitles at points. There's a scene where two English as a second language folks are talking in English with Japanese subtitles where I needed English subtitles too but you get the jist just fine. Some of the best creature design and effects in the man in suit era with some of the era cheesy digital effects but everything works well. As…

Every Criterion flash sale I cruise the 'top 5 films of so and so' for someone I admire as a maker so I can see what inspires folks who inspire me. This was a Bong Joon Ho pick and was one of the best films I've seen in a while. Opening as a play, there's some amazing back drops and miniatures to set the tone of the film. There's some amazing in camera scene transitions and such beautiful lighting that…

Just quickly, in conversation with Tsai Ming-liang's 'Goodbye, Dragon Inn' this film is so fucking loud. Dragon Inn' starts with a giant mallet of exposition explaining every characters motivations and setting the stage while in Goodbye we're watching a woman steam and eat her lunch instead. If you have time to double bill the two, it's a wild experience.

Ok, on to just this film. This is thunderous. Some of the best sound design I've heard in a film. One…

Went to school with a bunch of these folks and so glad to see this movie getting so much love. Very well done comedy that keeps folding in on itself keeping the same bits and motifs fresh the entire runtime. The mixed medium style really lends itself to the cartoony tone. Score is great. The supplemental material on the Blu-ray is the exact kind of thing that made me fall in love with and work in the industry for a while. It's a whole bunch of people doing something they love and it oozes through the screen contagiously.
