You CANNOT like this film. With its themes of social isolation, medical misdiagnoses and environmental pollution Safe slowly imbues you with a sense of helplessness and defeat. The film slowly but unwaveringly devolves from earnest health concerns to a concerningly understandable fear of everyday life.
Safe’s combination of framing, colour grading and use of sound creates the foundation for Carol (Julianne Moore) to traverse a bustling and apathetic California as her health and social life deteriorate.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes 2023
A movie paced like untangling a pair of earphones.
It feels as if each part of the film was edited by a different editor who wasn’t allowed to watch the previous parts.
The spectacle of the games is non existent, the plot is constantly driven forward by chance encounters and characters’ motivations are so inconsistent I felt motion sick.
Shoutout to Jason Schwartzmen for being the perfect proto-Flickerman, Hunter Schafer for making the film seem like it was grounded in any sort of reliable moral order and Peter Dinklage for supporting my morphine usage to numb the pain of the runtime.
