  Pretty Woman 1990

  I would say this is a light social romance more than a straight up romantic comedy. Roberts and Gere are of course beautiful and act their chemistry very well. Gere’s interest in her sometimes read as sinister to me at the beginning since his character was supposed to be so single mindedly focused on making money.

  The social relevance of the story is debatable because Roberts’ life as a sex worker is shown to be dangerous in the abstract (another sex worker of her acquaintance is found murdered in the opening scenes), but not especially influenced by the teeming life of LA around her.

  Now this is a movie! Hawke and Washington do a great job of gradually raising the temperature of the film, with incidents of dissolving the tension, so that it's never clear if Denzel is pretending in order to haze Hawke, or is actually morally compromised.

  I would say that Denzels' performance is magnetic enough that it would be nice to see Hawke falter a little more than he does, or perhaps for Denzel's character to make some indication that he was redeemable in order to tempt Hawke further.

  Watched on a turbulent plane ride home from LA, and felt like a perfect fit.

  The gags are perfectly set up. The photography is beautiful.

  In contrast to Playtime where he somehow seems like an ageless representative of our shared consciousness, I feel sad to see Monsieur Hulot’s aged face in this film.
