Vera Drake 2004
Mike Leigh is one of the greatest of Great British directors. His films are a celebration of Britishness, and the actors he employs deliver performances that effortlessly capture that Britishness. With Vera Drake, Leigh presents a story of a working class wife and mother who also happens to be a part-time abortionist in 1950’s London. Her costars aid her immensely and turn in equally fine performances as well. This 2004 film seems quite relevant in this day and age.

The Martian 2015
I suppose for space nerds this film is a wet dream. But for the rest of humanity it’s a tedious and exasperating experience. I found Matt Damon’s character to be terribly uninteresting and unlikeable. Actually, I wanted everyone in this film to explode.
