Tsui Hark's style is challenging for me. I've only seen a few of his films, but they drift in and out with loose commitments to plot. Having just watched the film on which this was based, made it easier to follow than something like Green Snake (1993). I think, for me, this film feels very American...but in a kind of depressing/disappointing way that says a lot more about the polluted state of this here national (indie?) cinema and nothing, really, about the people within its borders.
