Might be the low expectations but I was surprised at how this movie subverts some of the racist tropes common in this style of movie.

The main person who is tricked by the god con is the priest–who is so devoted that he buys everything till irrefutable proof is given to him. The chief goes along because it furthers his humanist side against the priest.

The visuals are often vibrant and fun and the characters are very charming. The main…

I honestly found this movie's final act scarier than many conventional horror movie ever got.

I managed to avoid spoilers/forget enough that I could watch this without knowing the twist, but I guessed what was going on fairly early on. This movie was not made for me.

I am not familiar with the names, events, and only vaguely familiar with the songs and bands. This impacted my enjoyment of the film a lot. When I watch a documentary, I want to have some idea of the type of accuracy we are dealing with, and with the comedy and the main character feeling kinda close to some other Coogan comedic performances, I feel unmoored.

The film tries to be cute with the references and stylings, and keeps winking at me, but when you don't know why someone is winking at you, it is not cute—it is annoying.

Great acting, often beautiful shots, good editing, and yet a pretty awful movie. Didn't feel any sympathy for any character, the reveals felt flat, the events disjointed, and the main character often is treated like he is both simultaneously a weak nobody and super attractive manipulator, and neither fit him well.

The film often aims for profound but comes across as naive. Meaning to be subversive but ends up reinforcing existing power structures. Trying to be sexy but without believable…
