I want to love this movie. I want to 5 star this movie. I want to say that this movie has a subversive commentary that shook me to my white-guilt filled core. I wanted to be the best movie. And for a while, it was. I cannot stress strongly enough that for the first 75% of the runtime, this was one of the best movies I'd seen this year.

Then the movie tripped over its own shoelaces, fell down the…

    The Skeleton Key

    ★★★½

This is a plot that would be easy to spoil so, I'm not going to say too much because the less known, the better. What I will say is that I think this movie is under known. There are other movies that address the same themes from this one, some even get ridiculously close (Jordan Peele, I'm looking in your direction), but they all came later. How did that happen?

Look, I can't say more, I just need you to believe for yourself that it's true. So, go clear the Spanish moss from the porch-rocker, and check out the movie!

    It's Home Alone with consequences!

There were a lot of things that I enjoyed about this; cool lighting, engaging sound design. The story moved so fast I didn't have to stop and think "do I like these people?" Doesn't matter, lets start a body count!

Could have got going a little faster and there was an external plot that wound up going nowhere. I mean, I didn't expect a clean resolution, but you can't just drop entire characters, come on now.

Fun one to throw on at a party. But, don't listen to me! Bar the windows, rewire the chandelier, and check out the movie!

It started so strong. Then it stubbed its toe. Then it never recovered and had ro continue limping for another hour. I wanted to like this SO much, because I started to see all of these little homages to greater works that I know and love. But it got boring and mean and made less and less sense.

It is a perfect recreation of an exploitation slasher from the 70s. Exploitation slashers are about my least favorite horror genre, and…
