I’ve seen this used a lot in Mexican telenovelas, where it works perfectly because it’s so heavy-handed and melodramatic. It’s a visual that conveys isolation and being stuck without needing much explanation. I don’t see it as much in American films, which makes it feel a bit more unique and impactful in The Graduate. If I were a filmmaker, I would definitely use it in my own work.
