How did I sleep on this? Absolutely loved it. A black satire comedy looking into the rapid development of post war Japan, with quite a heavy critique on capitalism. Ahead of its time with feminist commentary as well. Very clever use of a single set by adopting different angles, from above, below, sideways. What Time Is It There? 2001
No one deals with the feeling of alienation, longingness, and being an outsider quite the same way as Tsai Ming-Liang and that's why I love him. Chance encounters like brushing by someone on the street create poetic space for serendipity. I love how this film explores the way we form (or yearn for forming) connections, to loved ones, to strangers, to ghosts, or to things we do not know or even understand. And as always, sprinkled with absurdist humour to balance out/juxtapose emotional heaviness.
